Ann Mary Dornenburg Poploskie passed away peacefully early in the morning on Friday, October 23, surrounded by the warmth and love of her family in Michigan.
Ann was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, and her greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her beloved husband, Charles (Chuck) Poploskie; her three children and their spouses, Jon and Kristen Poploskie, Brian Poploskie and Kelly Jean Passage, and Elizabeth Poploskie and Santos Goni; her five grandchildren, Henry, Morgan, and Oliver Poploskie, and Santos and Edgar Goni, each the light and love of her life; her brother, Tom Dornenburg; and many loving nieces and nephews, who held a special place in her heart. She was preceded in death by her parents, Delbert D. and Theodora (Kearns) Dornenburg; her brothers, Peter and Robert Dornenburg; and her sister, Jean Thomas.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Ann earned her nursing degree from Duquesne University after graduating from St. Basil High School. She began her career as a beloved labor and delivery registered nurse and later taught nursing for several years. As her children grew older, she returned to school at Oakland University, where she earned a Master of Arts degree in mental health counseling. She opened a counseling practice with close friends from her program, volunteered at HAVEN in Pontiac supporting female victims of domestic violence, and served as a hospice volunteer, guiding families through the grieving process just as ours is supported today.
Ann was an extraordinary friend to everyone she met, with a rare gift for making people feel seen, heard, and special. Our family is held up in our grief by the many friends she gathered throughout her life, from her high school days, her sisters of Alpha Phi Omicron at Duquesne University, and her time in Ohio, to Troy and Lake Angelus, Michigan.
Ann and Chuck spent their lives giving back to others, with their faith as the foundation for everything they did. They loved traveling the world together, sharing adventures with friends and family. Ann joined every club, prayer group, and activity she could, and in her quiet moments she enjoyed painting, crafting, and reading.
Her strength, warmth, and enduring spirit will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew her. Plans for a celebration of life will be announced in the coming months. In lieu of flowers or food, please consider donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Alzheimer’s Association in her name.
