Barbara Maxine White (Chapin) of West Bloomfield, MI, age 84, counted her last earthly blessing and went Home to have coffee with her girls and her Lord Jesus on August 30, 2025. Forty years ago, Cleveland Clinic doctors raced Barb down the basement hallway to save time and save her life. Since then, each day with her has been a gift.
Born November 6, 1940, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to Doralee and Chuck Chapin, Barb previously resided in Norville, Michigan, Pontiac, Michigan, and Lodi, Ohio. She enjoyed working at the Lion's Den in the 1980s and 90s, where she met the love of her life, Tom Northey, and became a lifetime "Den mother" to a wonderful group of girls she loved like her own.
Barb was a prolific scrapbooker, an obsessive Christmas decorator, and at one time, a tireless sock hopper in the Pontiac dance halls of the 1950s. But the greatest joy of her life was the daily phone calls with each of her grandchildren, who affectionately called her "Hot Barb."
Young in spirit, big in heart, and wise beyond her years, Barb embraced every person she met and never let them go. Though she endured many tragedies, her faith and love never wavered. She sought to uplift others even when her own heart was breaking. Her door was always open with her coffee pot brewing. She changed the world from her kitchen table with her pork chops, stuffing, banana bread, and macaroni salad.
Barb is survived by her love of 40 years, Thomas Northey; sons Chuck White (Nikki) and Joe White (Katelyn); son-in-law Howard Weaver; grandchildren Danielle Weaver, Kati (Billy) Morrison, Briana Hurwitz, April White, Chapin White, Devin White, and Makayla White; ten great-grandchildren; her beloved sister JoAnn; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Chuck and Doralee Chapin; her beloved daughters Mary Sue Hurwitz and Deborah Lynn Weaver; son-in-law Jay Hurwitz; and her tenacious grandson Taeler Hurwitz.
A private memorial service and interment will be held in the fall.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital .
