Edward “Ed” Leonard Schreitmueller, of Petoskey, MI and Hutchinson Island, FL, formerly of Clarkston, MI age 95, joined his wife Geraldine “Geri” (Crist) in Heaven on July 14th 2026. They were happily married 50 years when she passed in 2006.
Ed, a native Detroiter and the second of 4 sons (Rudolph “Frank,” Thomas “Tom,” and Richard “Dick”) born to Rudolph and Irene Schreitmueller. He attended University of Detroit Jesuit High School, received a degree in business from the University of Detroit and an MBA from Indiana Northern University. Ed was a second-generation employee of General Motors who retired in 1993 after rising from territory sales roles to executive roles in Chevrolet and GM Parts Division, to leading international GM Parts operations in his later years. He was well known for taking charge of the Mr. Goodwrench marketing program and the NASCAR race team that GM sponsored. After retirement, he and Geri seasonally split time between their homes on the Atlantic Ocean/Indian River on Hutchinson Island, FL and Walloon Lake, MI. Ed was highly regarded as a speaker and leader in the planning and execution of programs that shaped successful organizations and events in both his work and personal life. He served as commentator at weekly masses held at St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church in Troy, MI during the 1970’s, often accompanied by his three eldest children who participated as an altar server, scripture reader, and musician. He also served 8 years as a rated officer with the U.S. Naval Air Reserve in Grosse Ile, MI. Ed strongly believed in being civic minded and actively helping those in need. He received the Paul Harris Award as a Rotarian in Clarkston, MI and participated as an officer in homeowner associations both in Florida and Michigan, as well as President of the Island Dunes Country Club in Hutchison Island, FL.
Ed was especially proud of his Austrian/German heritage and shared his passion for his ancestry by celebrating its language, classical music, cuisine, and of course, its beer, passing along these passions to his children. As a stein collector, he helped launch the Michisteiners Club, a regional chapter of Stein Collectors International, dedicated to the preservation and collection of antique and decorative beer steins from Germany. And he once crafted a German-style Rathskeller in the basement of his Troy, MI home that is still in use today.
Growing up, Ed was a top student and an exceptional basketball player through his high school years, where he played on a state championship Detroit Gesu team. His children recall him joining in their games at home, draining multiple 2-handed set shots in a row from the base line without a warm-up. Ed especially enjoyed sharing time with family and friends on lakes and oceans, with many a day spent cruising Deer Lake, Walloon Lake or the Indian River to share special moments with all those he loved.
He was an automotive aficionado and skilled restorer or cars in his younger days, with his favorite car being a 1940 Cadillac with running boards. As a sportsman, he was proud of his 4 holes-in-one, the fowl he hunted, and trophy fish caught in waters coast to coast. Ed and Geri especially enjoyed traveling the world together through the years and graciously entertaining family and guests, welcoming a circle of friends into the family that included their children’s close friends, creating memories they cherished forever. They and their guests never, ever ran out of food or drink, especially wine and Ed’s famous Manhattans.
As an avid musician, Ed played trumpet early on and focused more on keyboards as he grew older. His children enjoyed gathering to listen and play along with him to jazz standards on most days after evening meals, which developed their deep appreciation for musicianship and influenced his son Kurt to become a recognized Detroit area professional musician.
Ed is survived by his older brother Frank; his children Kurt, Karen, Jim, and Glen (Nahla); his grandchildren Steven, Nicole, Sarah, Hannah, Ryan, Ian, Justine, Cal, and Renna, and great grandchildren Ella, Ava, Sam, Andrew, Colin, and Kate. His legacy of respect, humor, kindness, quick wit, integrity, and honor will endure with his family. A Visitation will be held on Monday, July 20th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Lewis E. Wint & Son Funeral Home, 5929 S. Main St, Clarkston, MI. A Vigil for the Deceased will take place at 5 p.m. A funeral Mass will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 21st at Saint Daniel Catholic Church at 7010 Valley Park Drive in Clarkston. Donations in lieu of flowers are suggested to the Christ Child Society of Northern Michigan at P.O. Box 132 Harbor Springs, MI 49740 or Brother Dan’s Food Pantry at 415 State St, Petoskey, MI 49770.
