Gregory James Matzelle

January 21, 1978 – May, 29, 2026

Greg Matzelle, age 48, of Clarkston, passed away following his 2-year battle with cancer. He was a devoted husband to Shayla and father to his son Arrow and daughter Maple. His fierce loyalty, energy and enthusiasm spilled over in every aspect of his life.  Family was always his first love and first priority.

Greg leaves behind a legacy to his family who loved him deeply and will be remembered for his generous and loving ways.  He is survived by his Mother Susan and step-father Mike Garontakos; his Father Carleton and step-mother Judy Matzelle; Sisters – Andrea Regling and Allison Matzelle; Step-brothers Brian and Michael (Traci) Garontakos; Father-in-law Derrick and Mother-in-law Heather Myles; Sister-in-law Sydney and Brother-in-law Michael Helm; Brother-in-Law Kammron Myles; Aunt Dawne Lange; Aunt Beverly Kubota; Aunt Anne Marie and Uncle Rich Margaritondo; Uncle Gregory (Nala) and Sharon Matzelle; Aunt Carol Moya and Mike Durell; Uncle Tony Garontakos; Cousin Shawn and Masayo Lange; Cousin Yasmeen Asmar; Cousin Kimi and Jeff Laneave; Cousins Tony Henig and Jerry Lange; and many nieces and nephews: Dylan and Hanna Regling, Brayden Regling, Maya Regling; Jackson, Eliana and Landon Garontakos; Aleena, Sasha and Noah Lange; and Great nephew Ren Regling; He is also survived by many friends and business associates who appreciated his talents and balance of "wit" and "solemnity." He was an inspiration and great friend to everyone. He was truly a pleasure and fun to be around! He was a special individual who was loved by all!

Greg's favorite family adventures included:  Annual camping trips to the northern woods; Fishing with his son Arrow; Bike rides and walks with Shayla, Arrow, and Maple; Taking trips to Kentucky to visit his "in-laws"; Celebrating Holiday and Birthday gatherings at his parents' homes; Friend gatherings at his home with game playing and all the fixings and a bonfire to roast marshmallows; and shopping at thrift shops (he loved "junk"); wherever there was fun to be had, he was there with his family (Shayla, usually did the planning)!

When in High School, Greg participated in a co-op program to pursue his interest in woodworking projects with a local Cabinetry business in Clarkston.  He was 15 years old.  He finished High School early in January 1996 and walked with his Clarkston High School graduation class in June 1996. He attended college while becoming an entrepreneur in the building and special woodworking trades.  His company, Greg Matzelle Woodworker LLC, was formed in his early 20s. His success in pleasing his customers was built on honesty, strong work ethics and shared dreams.  His business clients fell in love with his process of developing detailed plans around designs that could be envisioned without a visual, and then brought to life in the highest level of quality and beauty. His projects included; Timber Frame Homes; Residential Lake Front Mansions; Historical Restorations, including one built in the 1800s; "Man Caves"; Restaurant and Business Renovations; Party Barns; and many unique furniture pieces, staircases, and projects that others were hesitant to attempt.

A Celebration of Life will be on Sunday, July 19th at 15th Street Tavern, 10081 S. Ortonville Rd, Clarkston, MI 48348  from 11:00 am-2:00pm.
