James Butzine died peacefully on September 19, 2026. He was born on August 8, 1946, in Watertown, Wisconsin, to Alfred and Junice Butzine. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ken. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Sher; his son, Todd Butzine (Sarah Thompson); daughters Sarah (Chris) Sullivan and Emily Butzine; and his five grandchildren: Isabella, 19; Madison, 14; Allie and Zoe, 12; and Ethan, 3. He is also survived by his brother, Tom (Francine) Butzine.
Jim was a proud school social worker at Clarkston High School for 36 years. He also loved teaching as an adjunct psychology professor at Oakland Community College for 35 years. He served as president of the Michigan School Social Work Association and received the State School Social Worker of the Year Award in 1982. In 1975, he served as the first director for SCAMP, a summer camp in Clarkston for young people of different abilities, which continues to thrive today.
Jim enjoyed many hobbies, including golf, gardening, bicycling, and casino trips. He was also an avid traveler, visiting all 50 states and four continents. But above all else, Jim’s greatest joy was his family. He cherished raising his three children and, later, spending time with his five grandchildren.
Before his passing, Jim asked that we share these words: “Thank you to all the medical professionals who supported me throughout my journey, and to my family and friends for all the good times shared.” Jim will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
