Judith "Judy" Johnston

Judith Ann Johnston (Judy) most recently from Clarkston and formerly of Mt. Clemens, MI, passed away on September 1, 2023 at the age of 83; mother of Patricia (Christopher) Foltz and Elizabeth (Scott) Reed; grandma of Kaitlin (Alan) Gibbs and Rachel Foltz.  She was born in Detroit, MI on August 8, 1940 to Robert Baker and Shirley (Rollet) Stevens and was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Sharon and Chickie and brother Gregory.

Judy graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 1973 with a degree in Education, majoring in Physical Education for grades K-12. She continued her studies and acquired a Continuing Certificate in Guidance and Counseling at Wayne State University in 1977.  Judy taught high school gym as well as health and was also the Coach for both the basketball and volleyball teams from 1969-1979.  In 1979, she reluctantly left teaching to start a more lucrative career as a US Mail Carrier.  She was employed by the Troy Post Office where she was soon promoted to a position as an EEO Counselor and then after receiving many promotions, retired in 2002 as a prestigious Senior Labor Relations Specialist at the Royal Oak Post Office.

In the Summers, Judy enjoyed coaching and playing for a local women's softball league, her team was called "Johnston's Phrogs" (she liked to collect and at that time it was frogs, she even had one tattooed on her shoulder holding a flower).  She painted her dressers green and orange and drove a VW Bug on which she had placed giant peace signs and smiley face decals.  She always loved music and dancing, and often liked to talk about when her father was an instructor for Arthur Murray and how he twirled her around his ballroom with beautiful wooden floors.

Later in life, she fully immersed herself in collecting and studying precious stones and crystals, at times faceting them into wearable pieces of jewelry she loved to wear and give as gifts.  She liked to play Bingo, had moved on from frogs to owls, and was happy to spend time looking out the window at her "lake".  However, in the end, her greatest achievement would appear to have been an article in The Detroit News that declared her to be "Sports Girl of the Year: 1959".  It was always framed on a wall wherever she lived, and nobody was coming to visit without being told to take a look at it.  She was greatly loved and will be sorely missed.

Per Judy's wishes, cremation services were entrusted to Lewis E. Wint Son Funeral Home, Clarkston. Interment Utica Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. Please leave a memory or condolence on Judy's online guestbook at www.wintfuneralhome.com
