Kenneth Hans Peterson

PETERSON, Kenneth Hans, of Clarkston, Michigan, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2026, at the age of 93, with his wife and children by his side. He was born on May 3, 1932, in Mass City, Michigan, to Hans and Aili Peterson.

Ken was the beloved husband of Elaine (Martin) Peterson for 66 years. He was a devoted father to Kaari (Andrea Lewak) Peterson and Eric (Melanie) Peterson, and a proud grandfather to Natalya, Noah, Joshua (Micah), and Jacob. He was also the dear brother of Sharon (Thomas) Plutchak.

Ken was born and raised in Mass City, a small Finnish community in Michigan's Upper Peninsula—a place he loved deeply and referred to simply as "God's Country." He was 100 percent Finnish and the living embodiment of "SISU", the Finnish concept of quiet strength, perseverance, and resilience. Ken did not seek attention or recognition. He faced life with humility, determination, and an unwavering steadiness, living his values through his actions every day.

After graduating from Mass City High School, Ken served his country in the United States Air Force, with postings in Fairbanks, Alaska, and Biloxi, Mississippi. These experiences broadened his world and gave him stories he would carry and share for the rest of his life. After his military service, he attended Michigan State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in Accounting.

In 1960, he married the love of his life, Elaine Martin, beginning a partnership that would span more than six decades. Ken met Elaine at a dance. Looking out at the dance floor, he saw her dancing with another man. Never known for his patience, Ken cut in mid-song and danced with her himself. He later said he knew from that moment that Elaine was the person he would marry. Elaine, on the other hand, took a bit more convincing. Dancing remained part of their story for years, including their time with the Independence Squares Square Dancing Club and winters spent together in Venice and Englewood, Florida.

Ken worked as a Field Agent for the Internal Revenue Service for more than 30 years, where he was known for his integrity, fairness, and strong work ethic. After retiring, he spent 12 years working part-time as a driver for the Colombiere Jesuit community. He often said this was his favorite job, because it gave him the opportunity to listen to the priests' life stories—something he genuinely loved. Ken had a deep curiosity about people. He listened closely, remembered everything, and became a keeper of countless stories. Few people knew more stories or told them better than Ken.

Ken was also an avid cyclist who rode thousands of miles well into his 80s, including an unforgettable coast-to-coast ride from Seattle to Delaware. He loved cycling so much that he would jokingly tell Elaine that on his list of true loves, cycling came first, followed closely by her.

He loved hot, black coffee—never iced! Coffee wasn't just coffee to Ken. It was a ritual, a conversation, a connection. He also had a lifelong love of ice cream, especially butter pecan, and delighted in taking his grandchildren out for a cone—passing along his appreciation for life's simple pleasures.

Ken never lost touch with his roots in the Upper Peninsula. The family returned often, and Ken seemed to know someone or knew someone who knew someone, everywhere he went. His world was built on relationships, stories, and quiet connection.
