Mary Sue Meyer

MEYER, Mary Sue (Ekelund) of Waterford; formerly of Troy, passed away on March 3, 2024; age 95. Preceded in death by her husband, W. Weston Meyer, sister, Sara "Sally" (late Newt Jr.) Skillman, nephew, Gregory Smith, great nephews, Philip Skillman and Garrett Skillman, and her parents Clifford and Katharine Ekelund. Loving sister of Georgia "Dodie" (Bruce) Smith. Beloved aunt of Christopher (Nancy) Skillman, Amy Skillman, David (Shelly) Smith, Newton "Tony" (Yvonne) Skillman, Stephen (Pam) Skillman, Donald (Kim) Meyer, Michael (Nancy) Smith, Tim (Jean) Skillman and Doug (Sabrina) Smith. She is also survived by 27 great nieces and nephews. In her youth, Mary Sue was an accomplished violinist and enjoyed spending summers on the farm her parents owned in Ortonville, Michigan. She attended high school at Kingwood School Cranbrook (Michigan) and The Shipley School (Pennsylvania) and completed her BA at Mary Washington College in Virginia. Then she attended the Katherine Gibbs School in New York which prepared her for her career at MacManus, John, and Adams Advertising Agency in Bloomfield Hills and later with the Oakland County Medical Society. She married her beloved Weston Meyer in 1967 and together they lived a life of generosity and fun. They honeymooned in Jamaica for tennis and sometimes traveled to the Alps for skiing. Mary Sue was a longtime member of the Birmingham Tennis Club, The Village Club, and the Otsego Ski Club as well as a member of the Junior League, a supporter of the Detroit Symphony, and annually attended the Stratford Festival in Canada. She was an avid tennis player throughout her life and was delighted to receive a greeting from tennis star Roger Federer on her 90 th birthday. Known to her nieces and nephews as Aunt Suzie, she always enjoyed birthdays, holidays, and celebrations with family. Her refrigerator was covered with photographs as each family grew. Although she could be shy, she had a flare for style and could be counted on to add pizazz to any outfit with bright colors, bold jewelry, and a twinkle in her eye. She lived life with a sparkle, just like the diamonds in her favorite song, "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend".
