It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Robert (Bob) McCombs of Clarkston, Michigan, on April 1, 2023, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Bob was born in 1949 in Flint, where he attended grade school. Bob graduated from Grand Blanc High School and EMU. He then joined General Motors Parts Division, where he made great friendships with coworkers and business associates. After retiring, Bob joined RHD Tire with a friend and enjoyed nearly 10 more years working with friends and business associates from his prior career at GM.
Bob is survived by his wife of 47 years, Margaret "Marti". He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Suzanne (Allen) Bolmgren of Louisville, Ohio, and Cynthia (Richard) Shelly of Norton, Ohio. Cynthia and Rick came to Clarkston to stay with Bob and Margaret during the last week of Bob's life. Bob leaves behind eight nephews and nieces across the country. He also leaves his beloved dog, Katie the Cocker Spaniel, who rarely left his side during the last days. She is still awaiting his return. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Jo Delaney and brother-in-law Brian Delaney.
Bob was blessed with a rich, full life. He enjoyed golfing, barefoot skiing, snow skiing, and boating. Bob treasured the many friendships he cultivated over the years the most. A round of golf or adventures on sales trips with friends or business associates made for a "best day ever!!" And, Bob kept in contact with his 3 roommates from college until the day he died.
During Bob's illness, friends and neighbors provided unbelievable support to Bob and his wife. They delivered meals, pizzas, homemade soups and cookies (too many of those!), and even removed snow from a long driveway! There was also an endless stream of cards, texts, letters, and home and hospital visits. All this love and support provided an enormous amount of comfort and relief to Bob and Margaret.
The family wants to extend their sincere appreciation and gratitude to the following group of medical professionals in Clarkston who relentlessly helped Bob fight for his life: Dr. Anthony Agrusa (who also made a house call), Dr. Numan Fateh (who never gave up) and his entire team at the Karmanos Cancer Institute of Clarkston, and the entire nursing and rehabilitation staff on the 6th and 7th floors at McLaren Oakland Hospital, Pontiac. Special appreciation is extended to Father John Bettin at St. Daniel Catholic Church in Clarkston. Father John responded to a desperate call for spiritual support one evening after office hours from a family that is Protestant and had never been to St. Daniel's. Custom Hospice, led by Morgan Casanova, RN, came to the support of Bob and his family 3 days before his death, and they provided compassionate and gentle support and prepared the family for the final hours. Also, special and sincere appreciation is given to Dr. Jennifer Caudill and Dr. Jessica Kado of Clarkston and their entire team who treated and cared for Bob for many years.
Bob was a good man. He loved his friends. He will be missed
